Peperomia Obtusifolia
The Peperomia obtusifolia plant is also known as the “Baby Rubber” or “American Rubber” plant. Itis is a compact and bush plant that does well in low lighting. It glossy leaves shine up well and make the perfect plant for a desktop or a statement piece on a shelf or mantelpiece.
Despite it’s name the plant doesnt come from the other rubber plant families and the plant is from the same family as the edible pepper. The plant can grow unevenly so dont be afraid to prune during the growing season.
Country of Origin:
Native to Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Size:
Reaches up to 12 inches (30cm) in height within 2 to 4 years.
Flowering:
The plant produces long stalk like flowers that are offwhite in colour.
Lifespan
With the right care this plant can live up to 7 years.
Toxicity
This plant is not poisonous to humans and pets if ingested.
Care Guide:
Light: Baby rubber plants prefer bright indirect light. A north or west facing room with a large window is best. They will also thrive in shadier areas.
They will thrive under artificial ights (if they are placed minimum 60 inches above it.)
Water: Wait until the soil is completley dry before watering this plant as it stores much of its water in it’s leaves. Once a fortnight is ideal and once a month in the colder months.
As a rule of thumb water 25ml per 10cm of pot for this plant.
This plant will handle British unfiltered tap water.
Humidity: This plant does best in high humidity 60% - 75% RH is ideal.
Temperature: This plant prefers moderate heat. 18c - 24c is ideal. Do not place the plant in near open windows in the Winter or autumn.
