Sansevieria

 

The Sanseviera plant is also known as the “Snake Plant” or “Mother in Laws Tongue” plant due to its sharp protuding leaves. This species of plant come in a variety of colours and heights and come from the same family as edible asparagus! The plant is hardy and easy to care for needing very little attention for it thrive.

The plant is slow growing but architecturally stunning. They are succulents so require very little water. They are known to be some of the most pest resilient plants on the planet. The leaves shoot up from the rhizome which is an underground stem system.

Country of Origin:

  • Native to Madagascar, Africa and South Eastern Asia.

Size:

  • Reaches up to 24 inches (60cm) in height within 5 to 7 years.

Flowering:

  • Sanseviera flowers are extremely rare indoors - so if your plant produces some, give yourself a clap on the back. Long stalks will appear from the soil and reach higher then the leaves up to 100cm tall. The stalks are covered in dozens of flower buds. These resemble white lillies when fully open and have a very sweet scent.

Lifespan

  • With the right care this plant can live up to 10 years.

Toxicity

  • This plant is mildy poisonous to humans and pets if ingested.

Care Guide:

  • Light: Sansevieria prefer bright indirect light. A north or west facing room with a large window is best.

    They will thrive under artificial ights (if they are placed minimum 60 inches above it.)

  • Water: The plant is drought tolerant and can handle long periods without water. Like a cactus it stores water in it’s leaves.

    Signs of over watering are weak, spongy and unstable leaves. It is best to water this plant once a month in the winter months and the fortnightly in the summer months. Wait until the soil is completley dry before adding anymore water.

    As a rule of thumb water 15ml per 10cm of pot for this plant.

    This plant will handle British unfiltered tap water.

  • Humidity: This plant does best in moderate humidity 50% - 60% RH is ideal.

  • Temperature: This plant prefers moderate heat. 18c - 24c is ideal. Do not place the plant in near open windows in the Winter or autumn.
