Crypanthus

 

This is a hardy and very easy to care for plant well suited to beginners. It’s star shaped foliage has earned it the nickname “Earth Star.” The plants rich dark leaves are waxy to the touch and have striking pink and brown veins.

It’s a room saving compact plant that does well in most envrionments. They are especially well suited to terrariums.

Country of Origin:

  • Native to Brazil, but now found throughout the rainforests of South America

Size:

  • Reaches up to 5 inches (10cm) in height and 20 inches (50cm) in width in 2 - 5 years.

Flowering:

  • Small white flowers that grow in the middle of the leaves. These plants have a long flowering time of up to 6 months usually from April to early September.

Lifespan

  • With the right care this plant can live between 3 - 5 years.

Toxicity

  • This plant is not poisonous to humans and pets.

Care Guide:

  • Light: “The Earth Star” are happy to receive direct bright light as well as bright indirect light. They will not grow well in the shade or dark rooms.

    They will also thrive under artificial and grow lights (if they are placed minimum 24 inches above it) making it great for office spaces.

  • Water: Crypanthus enjoy weekly watering in the summer, though in the colder months only water once every 3 to 4 weeks. Water only when the top inch of soil is dry

    As a rule of thumb water 50ml per 10cm of pot for this plant.

    This plant will handle British unfiltered tap water.

  • Humidity: This plant does best in high humidity 60% - 80% RH is ideal. Great for kitchens or bathrooms with enough light. Weekly misting in less humid areas benefits the plant.

  • Temperature: 15c - 24c is ideal. The plant can tolerate temperatures as low as 10c but avoid placing it near any cold draughts.
